Artemis CCD Cameras from Venturescope

Now you can have a large format CCD camera at a price you can afford...

The Art 11002 camera is designed to offer a full 35mm format CCD at a breakthrough price.

Artemis art-11002 large format CCD camera Kodak has a great reputation for providing sensors for high end astronomy applications, so sensor chip for the new camera is the Kodak KAI11002, an 11 million pixel device with an active area slightly greater than traditional 35mm film.

The pixel size is 9µm square; which is relatively large and makes a good match for a broad range of telescopes.

It has an electronic shutter which, makes it very easy to use both for imaging faint deep sky objects or large scale images of a bright moon.

Because of the 11 mega pixel chip your pictures will look great whether viewed on your computer screen, printed out, or featured in a magazine.

On your computer it’s possible to zoom into regions and keep seeing more and more detail.

The Art11002 is designed to be simple to use. An excellent Image Capture program (written by John Groves) is included as are plug-ins for the image processng software Astro Art 2 and Maxim DL.

For simplicity and ease of use, the camera only has two sockets, one for power (12V) and the other a USB2 connection.

The camera uses a standard Artemis operating system on a PIC microcontroller running at 32Mhz. This looks after most of the house keeping functions of the camera including temperature control of the sensor, so you can concentrate on taking your images!

The camera uses a fast analogue to digital converter to provide you with speedy downloads at high resolution, using a USB 2 controller to interface your camera with your computer.

You can easily update your camera's software as and when required by using the USB 2 link provided from the Artemis web site.

The Art 4021 camera

Artemis art-4021 large format CCD camera The new ART 4021 uses the high performance Kodak KAI 4021 CCD which is smaller than the chip used in the 11002 but gives you high (peak 55%) Quantum Efficiency. This CCD provides a very good compromise between large imaging area and high QE but is a lot more manageable in use compared to the ART1102 for telescopes cannot adequately fill the large 35mm format sensor in the ART1102.

With very low dark noise and low readout noise (10e) this camera is both light and relatively compact and is ideal for use with many of the small APO refractors that predominate and will provide a very wide field with such telescopes.

For example at the prime focus of a typical 80mm APO refractor the ART 4012 will provide a field of view of approx 2 degrees by 2 derees and a superior sampling rate to the ART1102.

The ART 4021 is also highly suited to long focal length high resolution imaging with typical amateur sized telescopes of 2m to 3m focal length and is a true dual purpose and versatile camera.
